SUMMARY:Sounds of Shakespeare: Music From the Middle Ages to the Early Baroque
DESCRIPTION:Beginning with an early round proclaiming the Summer by John of Fornsette (born 1228)\, “Sumer is icumen in”. The program ends with guitar music by a Spanish composer\, Gaspar Sanz (born 1640)\, Los Canarios. Between those pieces\, you will find several choice works by John Dowland\, including a beautiful lament and dance music. There will also be variations on the ancient Burgundian folk melody\, L’homme armé\, Jon Come Kisse Me Now\, and other tunes. Likewise\, we plan to feature some popular madrigals arranged for recorders on the program. Farmer’s “Fair Phyllis” and Dowland’s “What if I Never Speede” are two of my favorites. El Grillo (The Cricket) will also join the ranks among the madrigals\, clearly chirping away and answering with its distinctive call on ancient crumhorn voices\, recorders\, and percussion.
